Day 57 (October 16, 2006) - Salt Lake City, UT
<<^>>
Well, it's not raining, it's pouring and it has been all night. Our Vespa is soaked, the poor thing. It's quite cold too. Taking advantage of the Internet connection, we need a backup plan and I have some work to do. Our checkout is at 12:00pm and we take full advantage of it. The weather forecast on our itinerary for the rest of the week loooks very bleak, with overnight temperatures dropping in the negatives. We are considering skipping entirely northern Colorado and drive straight to southern Utah, but the situation in Moab is not much different. So, we will try and if needed, we will winterize the RV, rent a car and spend a few nights in motels around the places we want to visit.

By the time we leave SLC it's 2:00pm and the clouds are so low we cannot even tell if the mountains around are still there. But as we drive up and up and up in the Little Cottonwood canyon towards Park City, we realize that the rain is changing to snow and there is some accumulation on the side of the road. It is definitely snowing in Park City. We take a look at the surrounding area but we are unable to even spot the ski slopes, so we continue to our destination. We are not even in Heber City, 30 miles away in the valley, when the sky opens up completely and by the time we hit the Uinta National Forest, it's all blue and clear. Ah, this would be perfect for a bike ride. It's too late by now and we cannot make plans for Petr to stay somewhere while I go ahead. Some stretches are quite challenging, but it's mostly flat and with some sweet downhills. Around Roosevelt, we cross a large valley that reminds me of the "Land Before Time" movies with Littlefoot and his friends that my daughter Francesca loved so much until she was almost a teenager. I can imagine these prehistoric creatures roaming about in here. Then it dawns on me: of course, we are heading to the Dinosaur National Monument in Vernal - no wonder! We are going to dry camp in Vernal tonight.

And advert for a Cowboy Poetry Festival along the way. Oh boy!

The view around us.

A lake.

The road ahead.

Clouds in the distance.

Towards sunset.

I thought these clouds looked strange.

The sunset around a reservoir.
